How to get emergency dental care

Getting emergency dental care is simple; there is also more than one way to do it. Here are some options you can try.

  • Contact the dentist you are registered with, because there may be an opportunity for an appointment sooner than usual; if not, then they can refer you to an out-of-hours dentist.
  • Contact an out-of-hours dentist. These dental practices provide dental services (particularly emergencies) beyond the typical operating hours of a normal dentist.
  • Contact 111, describe your symptoms or issue with the operator, and they will provide you with guidance, barring that they can help you find emergency dentists if that is what you need.

The best option is to contact us at Eye & Dental Clinic. We can book an emergency appointment as soon as possible and begin to treat you for your issues, or refer you if there is further treatment needed that we can’t provide

Can dentures cause a dental emergency?

Yes, dentures can cause a dental emergency through a variety of methods. In this instance, it is important to rectify it as soon as possible. Damage to dentures, or incorrectly fitted dentures, can cause:

  • Cuts on the gums.
  • Cuts can become infected, which can result in worse conditions. This can affect the elderly more, whose immune systems get weaker over time.

You know you need emergency dental care when

  • You have severe pain that prevents you from chewing, eating or drinking properly.
  • The pain is preventing you from going about your normal day.
  • There is swelling around the area of pain.
  • There is any pain coming from areas that are affected by dentures or dental implants.
  • You have sustained trauma to the teeth that has left you in a lot of pain.

You can use over-the-counter medicines if suitable for you. Please check with your GP or pharmacist before taking any medications. Some patients use cold water or use Orajel dental gel for a toothache. This can be effective, but it does not treat the sole cause of the toothache. Some patients use oil of cloves for a toothache, which, again, is another effective method of providing some toothache relief. All patients who suffer from a toothache should be formally assessed by a dentist.

Teeth are linked to the trigeminal nerve, which has many branches around the face. Often toothache wakes you up at night, and has a constant dull ache or throb, painkillers can sometimes help or take the edge off it. Some people describe it almost like a heartbeat in a tooth. Patients often complain of it being tender to bite on or extremely sensitive. Patients usually complain of a toothache coming in waves, with hours of pain then going away and coming back. Patients can get a bad taste or notice a blister/ulcer-type appearance around the tooth, which can come and go or get bigger and smaller. This is when a dental abscess can appear, which may need draining, or patients need to go to a hospital in extremely severe circumstances.

All our staff starting from reception to nurses and dentists, are highly qualified to help you relax. You are in safe hands with our team, who are extremely experienced in dealing with anxious and nervous patients. You do not need to be registered at Eye and Dental Clinic or any other dentist to be seen. We accept and welcome everyone who needs to get relief from a toothache.

Payment will be taken securely via phone, debit card or credit card to book the emergency dental appointment. Further payment will be taken at the clinic for dental treatment.

Please bring a list of your most current medication or most recent prescription. If you have this on an app, this will also be helpful. The dentist will be able to treat you adequately and safely, knowing your full medical history.

Please give us 48 hours’ notice, or your appointment will not be refundable. Please contact the Eye and Dental Clinic if you do need to change the appointment time, and they may be able to accommodate via eyeanddentalclinic@hotmail.com.

Of course, checking your symptoms online can be a great indicator of possible issues you may have, but the reality is that without consultation from a medical expert, you will likely still deal with the issue, or it might become something worse if you don’t treat it the way it should be treated.

You can go to urgent care for a dental emergency. If you have issues such as an abscess in your gums, a chipped tooth, or wisdom tooth pain, etc., however, the likelihood is you will be made to wait, and once seen, you will be advised to see an emergency dentist. You can go to urgent care for a dental emergency, but you will only be referred to see an emergency dentist. The only exception, in this case, would be if you received physical trauma to the jaw or face, urgent care would likely do an X-ray, etc., depending on the severity. In this instance, the tooth isn’t the core issue, so any dental work that may be required will be advised to you after treatment of the physical trauma. Sometimes, infections in and around our gums can lead to serious pain, discomfort, swelling and more. In this instance, a medical professional will again advise you to see an emergency dentist, who can accurately locate the source and cause of the infection and begin to treat it. Of course, nobody wants to sit around waiting for treatment, only to be told they have to go somewhere else for help, and may not even get that help on the same day.
