FAQ guide: composite bonding vs veneers – Bury’s best dentist answers!

Hi everyone, Dr Imran Uddin here. Let’s talk honestly about smile makeovers.

As the highest reviewed cosmetic dentist in Bury, one of the questions I’m asked every single week is: Should I get composite bonding, or should I get veneers?

Let’s take some time to clear the air. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer for this, and if anyone tells you otherwise, they’re selling…not serving! In this FAQ guide, I’m going to break down the real differences between composite bonding and veneers. The pros, the cons, and everything most clinics avoid mentioning, so you can make an informed, correct choice that fits you. Not just a sales script.

So what’s the difference between Composite Bonding and Veneers? 🦷

When we’re looking at the material, composite bonding is made from a tooth coloured resin, whereas porcelain veneers are made from a medical-grade porcelain. The process is vastly different. Bonding is sculpted directly on your teeth in one appointment (seriously!), whereas porcelain veneers are custom-made shells that are handcrafted in one of our trusted labs.

The main question people ask is about durability. Yes, it’s true, composite bonding is not forever. Composite bonding, with the right care, right diet and real looking after, can last around 5 to 7 years, though most people average around 3-5. Veneers, though, can last up to 10 years with the right care.

Cost is a big one, with our composite bonding currently starting at £300 per tooth, and porcelain veneers starting at £699 per tooth.

In terms of reversibility, composite bonding is really simply reversible; it’s done with minimal to no tooth alteration. On the other hand, veneers (unless you’re in a really good position and require no enamel trimming or cutting) are not as easily reversed.

Here’s the truth most clinics avoid: both treatments have limitations.

  • Composite bonding can stain, especially if you drink coffee, red wine, or smoke.
  • Veneers often require irreversible enamel removal. Once you go veneers, you can’t always “go back.”
  • Not everyone is suitable for either option — gum health, bite alignment, and lifestyle all play a huge role.

I always tell my patients, your smile makeover shouldn’t look good just for Instagram. It should last, function and fit you as a person.

When you visit Eye & Dental Clinic in Bury, we’ll show you real before and after results, not stock images. We use the best scanning technology to inspect every part of your mouth, gum line and even X-rays to check your bone health.

That’s transparency in every sense of the word.

Cosmetic dentistry isn’t just about teeth – it’s about confidence, emotion and personality. When someone sits in my chair, I ask: What would it mean to you if you could smile without thinking about it?

For some, it’s about dating again.

For others, it’s walking into a job interview with confidence.

We’ll talk, design and plan together. You’ll always know what’s happening, what it costs and why it’s the right option for you.

At Eye & Dental Clinic, we don’t do hard sells or “limited time” gimmicks. Instead, we give you self-service tools to explore treatment at your own pace. For example, you can access flexible 0% finance options and calculators on our website, or call our AI receptionist to book an appointment.

Whether you’re looking for a single chipped tooth fix, an extraction, or a complete smile transformation, you can plan it around your lifestyle – not ours.

So I promised an FAQ, and here it is!

  1. Does composite bonding damage teeth? No, bonding doesn’t require any drilling or enamel removal. It’s applied directly to the surface and can be removed or replaced later.
  2. Are veneers permanent? In a way, yes. They often require a small amount of enamel to be removed, meaning they’ll always need to be replaced or maintained over time.
  3. Which looks more natural? Modern porcelain veneers tend to mimic light reflection better than bonding, but when bonding is done well, it can look very natural.
  4. Can I whiten bonded teeth? You can whiten around them, but not the bonding material itself. If you plan to whiten, always do it before bonding.
  5. What’s cheaper, veneers or bonding? Composite bonding is much more affordable initially, but it may need maintenance sooner than veneers. Veneers are an investment that lasts longer.
