How to get emergency dental care

Emergency dental care is a serious issue; if you have a dental emergency and leave without the help of a dental professional, you are putting yourself at risk of further complications or worse.

We understand that not everybody knows how to get emergency dental care; that’s why we at Eye & Dental Clinic are here to provide all the answers you may be looking for.

Over 40% of people in the Northwest of England have struggled to attend a dentist appointment, whether this be through failure to be referred by the NHS, or for other reasons.

Coincidently, approximately 5 million people never had an eye test, and with those within that figure who haven’t had a follow-up eye test in 3 years or more, it’s safe to say most people aren’t aware that their vision may need checking or correcting.

Whether it’s your eyes or teeth that are the issue, the team here at Eye & Dental Clinic are leading by example in both minor eye care and cosmetic dentistry, along withemergency dental treatment, provided by real people whose aim and passion is to provide remarkable clinical care so you can live comfortably.

What is emergency dental care?

Emergency dental care is essentially seeing a dentist for a serious issue that you can’t wait until your next appointment to see them about. Emergency dental care is any instance in which the dental issue must be treated immediately.

You know you need emergency dental care when

  • You have severe pain that prevents you from chewing, eating or drinking properly.
  • When the pain is preventing you from going about your normal day.
  • When there is swelling around the area in pain.
  • If there is any pain coming from areas that are affected by dentures or dental implants.
  • You have sustained trauma to the teeth that has left you in a lot of pain.

Dental emergency examples

  • Painful Toothaches. This can happen as a result of wisdom teeth growing, abscesses, poor dental hygiene, trauma, and more. A toothache can be extremely distressing; it can stop you from eating and functioning normally.
  • Tooth Sensitivity. This is having feelings of pain or discomfort when your tooth either touches something or feels something hot and cold. This becomes an emergency when it completely stops you from being able to eat.
  • Broken Filling/Tooth. This is an emergency, as a broken tooth can leave your gums and nerves in the tooth exposed to plaque and other contaminants, not to mention the aesthetic issue; broken teeth must be addressed immediately.
  • Swelling Abscess. An abscess is the result of an infection in the gums, beside the teeth. A common occurrence for this is due to food becoming lodged within the gum; seeds and bones are just some of the culprits that can cause swelling to occur.
  • Denture Adjustments. Dentures can sometimes become uncomfortable or painful to wear; in this instance, they must be seen to, as any pain could lead to injury, which could become infected.
  • Crowns & Bridges. Permanent features of the teeth should be well-maintained and not lead to any discomfort or pain. The permanent nature of these options means that they should be tended to immediately.
  • Painful Gums. This can occur as a result of infection, improper care, or a sign of something worse. If the pain in your gums is unbearable, its better to book an emergency appointment rather than wait for it to clear.

Shall I go to A&E for emergency dental care?

Only if your dental emergency is a result of physical trauma or illness will an accident and emergency ward deal with those issues first. Any dental work that is required after their treatment will likely be done at the dentist, for which you will likely get a referral.

How to get emergency dental care

Getting emergency dental care is simple; there is also more than one way to do it. Here are some options you can try.

  • Contact the dentist you are registered with, because there may be an opportunity for an appointment sooner than usual. If not, then they can refer you to an out-of-hours dentist.
  • Contact an out-of-hours dentist. These dental practices provide dental services (particularly emergencies) beyond the typical operating hours of a normal dentist.
  • Contact 111, describe your symptoms or issue with the operator, and they will provide you with guidance. If not, they can help you find emergency dentists if that is what you need.
  • The best option is to contact us at Eye & Dental Clinic. We can book an emergency appointment as soon as possible and begin to treat you for your issues, or refer you if there is further treatment needed that we can’t provide

Should I call an ambulance for dental care?

No, the ambulance service is specifically for medical emergencies; if you proceed to call them despite knowing this, you will be redirected to the appropriate service.

If you have an accident or incident that results in serious injury to your jaw and your teeth are damaged, come out or if you have damaged your gums, you can call an ambulance; however, the ambulance will treat you in regard to keeping them stable until they can get seen in the hospital.
