What is a composite filling for a tooth

What is a composite filling for a tooth? Why would you need to get a filling in the first place? Read this to find out everything you need to know.

Do you need to get a filling, but are not familiar with the various options you have to choose from? Are you wondering, ‘What is a composite filling for a tooth? We will go through everything you need to know below, from what tooth fillings are and why you need them, to what a composite filling is.

At Eye & Dental clinic, we offer a variety of fillings to suit your needs, with composite fillings being some of the most popular. Read on to find out what you need to know.

About tooth fillings

Tooth fillings are used to treat holes or cavities that develop in your teeth. Permanent fillings can be made from various materials, including silver amalgam, gold, porcelain, or composite fillings, which we will be exploring in this article. You can also get temporary tooth fillings, which can be made from Cavit, glass ionomers, zinc phosphate cement, intermediate restorative materials, or zinc oxide eugenol.

These different materials can be used to fill the holes in your teeth and stop you from experiencing pain, as well as stop the cavity from getting worse. With that being said, if you have cavities that have gone far enough to reach the pulp inside a tooth, you will likely need to have the tooth extracted to prevent further issues.

Although getting a filling can be daunting, it happens more frequently than you think, and it isn’t anything you need to worry about. While you will usually get permanent fillings to solve your cavity problem, you may initially need to get a temporary one until your dentist has the time to put in one that will last. These temporary fillings usually only last a few weeks and will eventually fall out, making them unsuitable for long-term wearing.

Do fillings weaken your teeth?

Fillings do not weaken your teeth. While it’s understandable how some might think otherwise, this is simply not the case. A filling will help to keep a tooth safe and prevent further damage from occurring, which can help to strengthen the tooth as opposed to weakening it.

Before a filling is put in, the damaged parts of a tooth, which cause pain and discomfort, will be removed. The filling will then fill up these holes and relieve sensitivity and pain.

What is a composite filling for a tooth?

So, what is a composite filling for a tooth? In short, composite fillings are the standard fillings dentists use to help repair your teeth. They are coloured to be almost dental to your natural tooth colour, which makes them difficult to notice and a nice, discreet dental filling option.

Composite fillings go by different names, including tooth-coloured fillings, white fillings, and resin fillings, depending on the clinic you go to. These terms are interchangeable, so just remember that they all mean the same thing.

Are composite fillings permanent?

Composite fillings are a type of permanent tooth filling, but they do not last forever. Most of these fillings will last between 7 and 10 years, depending on how well they are looked after. In some cases, you may be able to keep your composite filling for up to 12 years, but don’t bet on this.

Why don’t composite fillings last forever? Daily use will slowly wear the filling away, and accidental damage can happen, too. However, all it takes is a quick procedure at your dental practice to reapply the filling and resolve the issue.

Are composite fillings a good option for cavities?

Tooth fillings are not as painful as getting a tooth extracted, but neither are a particularly relaxing experience, and they both have their place.

Although you can get temporary at-home filling kits to alleviate pain from cavities, we do not recommend them.

Do composite fillings break easily?

Generally, no. Composite fillings are strong enough to withstand a good amount of force and chewing, so they are fantastic options when it comes to fillings. Along with porcelain fillings, composite fillings are the best filling options out there.

Getting a tooth filling: a quick breakdown of the process

Looking for a quick breakdown of what to expect if you are getting a filling at a dental clinic?

  1. Preparation for the procedure – this is an examination where we will walk you through the steps.
  2. The applicable area in your mouth will be numbed to ensure that there is no pain. First, some pre-numbing gel will be applied, then you will receive a local anaesthetic injection.
  3. Tooth decay will be removed.
  4. The appropriate/chosen filling material will be chosen.
  5. The filling material will be placed where it needs to be.
  6. Setting the filling – in the case of composite fillings, an LED light will be used to cure the layers of the material so that it hardens.
  7. Bite alignment and adjustments to ensure that there is no discomfort.
  8. Polish the teeth and add the finishing touches – the filling will be polished to be nice and glossy so that it matches your teeth.

Thanks to the nature of composite fillings, they are immediately secure in your mouth. This means that you should be able to eat as soon as you leave the clinic. With that being said, if your mouth still feels numb, your dentist will probably suggest that you wait about two hours before taking a bite out of your favourite burger.

If in doubt, always ask your dentist when you can eat after a filling and what to avoid after getting a filling, as guidance will vary depending on the type of filling.
