What is better: dental bridge or a crown?

Have you always wanted to smile with confidence and dreamt about getting your teeth fixed, but you don’t know where to start? We’re here to help and clear things up for you. In this post, we will look at the difference between a dental bridge and a crown and what each type of dental work can do for you.

We also introduce ourselves at Eye & Dental Clinic and give you more information on the different services that we offer to give you the smile you’ve always wanted.

Dental bridges vs crowns

Dental Bridges & Crowns offer both a functional and aesthetic solution to very damaged, decayed or missing teeth. All of these solutions are bespoke and require you to sit for dental impressions so that a prosthetic tooth, or teeth, can be expertly made in a dental lab.

At Eye & Dental Clinic, your dentist will talk you through the options available and offer clear advice and guidance on the best solution for your needs.

Dental crowns

The purpose of a dental crown is to cover and restore a damaged tooth without having to extract it. The crown is placed over the existing tooth and cemented in place. A dental crown is essentially a cap (and often gets referred to as a cap) for teeth to improve their appearance.

Crowns can be made from a number of different materials such as porcelain, ceramic and zirconia. Different dentists use different materials for a range of reasons, but it will largely depend on several factors, such as the position of your gums and how much of your tooth is visible when you smile.

Dental crowns are great for holding cracked teeth together, replacing oversized or worn-out filings and restoring broken, chipped or discoloured teeth. In addition, they can improve the general shape of your tooth and help restore the look to improve your smile.

The cost for a crown per tooth varies from dentist to dentist, but you can expect to pay around £650 upwards in some dentists’ surgeries. The actual cost of the whole treatment will depend on various factors, including how many teeth you want to be covered with a crown, where in the world you get it done and if additional work is required. If you’re considering a gold crown, these can cost anything from £2,000 upwards.

Dental bridges

The purpose of a dental bridge is to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring them to existing teeth. Dental bridges are essentially false teeth that are held down on either side of them. Most of the time, they’re made from porcelain, so they blend in naturally with your own teeth. People choose dental bridges because they have lost a tooth, usually through tooth decay, gum disease or injury.

If you’re missing a tooth and want to get it covered in a natural-looking way, a dental bridge is the way to go. The most commonly used type of dental bridge is a traditional fixed bridge. This type of bridge uses a crown on either side to attach to. Other dentists may use a different type, a resin-bonded bridge, which uses porcelain or a thin metal framework to bond the bridge to your teeth on either side of the space.

Dental bridges offer a natural-looking solution to gaps in your teeth, and they also help you to speak and chew as you normally would with a full set of teeth. To have a dental bridge, you need to have good overall oral health, without decay or gum disease and have healthy teeth, particularly on either side of the gap.

The cost of dental bridges varies and will change greatly from person to person, depending on how much work needs to be done, as well as if additional treatments are needed. At some dental surgeries, expect to pay around £500 upwards per tooth, but again, it varies between practices.

What’s the difference between a dental crown and a bridge?

Whilst crowns and bridges are related dental procedures, they both serve different purposes. If you have an imperfection on your tooth that you want to be covered up, then your best option is to have a dental crown fitted because this acts as a cap to cover your existing tooth.

If you have a gap in your teeth due to tooth decay, gum disease or after an accident that you want to be filled, a dental bridge is the best option, as this acts as a natural-looking tooth that is attached to your original tooth or crowns on either side. You may need both procedures performed on your teeth, depending on what your teeth are like and the desired goal.

Speak to your dentist if you are unsure about which procedure to go for.

What else do we offer?

As well as bridges and crowns, we have an array of services from composite bonding to veneers and even emergency dental treatment. In this section, find out more about what services we offer and how we can help you.

Composite bonding

Composite bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure where a composite resin material, the colour of a tooth, is applied to your teeth to repair damage and improve your smile and confidence. It is a cost-effective yet long-lasting solution that improves the appearance of broken, chipped, stained or cracked teeth.

You may be surprised to learn that your perfect smile is well within your budget and doesn’t break the bank like many other cosmetic procedures. At the Eye & Dental Clinic, we want composite bonding to be affordable for everyone so that you can have the teeth you’ve always dreamed of.

The cost of composite bonding for the edge of a tooth is £200, and for a full tooth, the cost is £300. You will be given an exact cost upon consultation, once your dentist has discussed your options and how much composite bonding you will need.

If you’re wondering what the difference is between composite bonding and dental bonding, they are interchangeable terms for the same treatment.

Veneers

Veneers are a great option if you’re looking for the perfect smile you’ve always wanted. If your front teeth are crooked, misaligned, chipped, gappy, or discoloured, veneers offer the solution to all these problems and more! Veneers are the go-to treatment for the perfectly straight smile you see on celebrities and film stars.

Veneers are a cosmetic dental treatment intended to improve the appearance of your teeth. They’re normally made from either porcelain or composite, and they are considered to be a medium to long-term solution. They are a solution to correcting flaws and imperfections in your teeth, which is why they are so popular.

The cost of veneers varies greatly depending on the material used, the number of veneers and if other treatments are needed, but you can expect to pay £400 upwards per tooth.

What to do in a dental emergency

Lastly, we also provide emergency treatment for dental emergencies. Going to urgent care in a dental emergency can result in long wait times and a follow-up appointment on a different day for procedures that can’t be performed there. If you’re unsure, see our post on what to do in a dental emergency.
