Which is more painful tooth extraction or filling

Which is more painful – a tooth extraction or a filling? Why would you need either of these procedures? Learn everything you need to know right here.

Going to a clinic for dental work can be incredibly daunting, and at Eye & Dental Clinic, we get it. When it comes to procedures, people often want to know which is more painful, tooth extraction or filling. While there are dozens of other procedures around, these are both incredibly common and, therefore, worry a lot of people.

The good news is, neither option is painful enough for you to worry about it. However, because they are so different, you can expect completely different experiences.

Is it more painful to get a tooth extraction or a filling?

Tooth extraction is more painful than filling. This is because tooth extraction removes a tooth from your mouth, while getting a filling allows the tooth to remain where it is and get some treatment.

When you get a tooth extracted, you will also need to go for follow-up visits and potentially get over-the-counter pain relief. Once the procedure is complete, the bleeding will be stopped with gauze, and you may need to press ice against the area to help reduce the swelling. In some cases, you may also need to visit the clinic again to remove stitches if they don’t dissolve.

The level of pain you might experience with tooth extractions will vary depending on the type of extraction, too. Some areas are more or less accessible, and less accessible areas will be more surgical and more complicated. However, in both cases, local anaesthesia will be administered.

Tooth fillings are used to repair teeth that have minor fractures or other kinds of damage. They involve removing the portion of the tooth that is damaged or decayed, then filling it in with the appropriate material. This process is less invasive, and the natural tooth is preserved where it is possible.

Recovery times for fillings are much shorter than those of extraction, thanks to the nature of the procedure. There will be less discomfort after the filling has been put in, too, so you don’t need to worry about all the checkups like you would for a tooth extraction.

Why would you need an extraction?

You would only need a tooth extraction if your tooth is damaged beyond repair. More extreme cases will require the tooth to be removed to relieve your pain and help you recover.

A tooth extraction is usually the last resort, and something that we would rather avoid if at all possible. Unlike with a filling, which can blend into your teeth, getting a tooth extracted can be very noticeable.

If you get a tooth extraction, you may want to undergo additional procedures, such as getting a dental implant, dentures, or fixed bridges to replace the tooth. This comes with added cost and can take a mental toll on you.

Why would you need a filling?

Fillings are ideal for minor damage/decay, or fractures within the tooth. When you get a filling, the aim is to preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible and replace the affected areas with a suitable material such as porcelain or composite resin.

Since fillings are usually easy, they are not a particularly stressful procedure to undergo. So, if you notice any issues with your teeth, or if something is mentioned during a checkup, don’t be put off by the option of getting a filling. In the end, it will help you, and you can live pain-free.

It’s also important to mention that you can get a temporary filling if you need to. This will be used to protect your tooth for a shorter period of time until you can get it permanently repaired. These fillings will help to alleviate pain so that you can live your life before permanent measures are taken.

Does a tooth extraction take longer than a filling?

Unfortunately, there is no simple answer for which procedure takes longer. The length of time an extraction and filling takes can depend on a number of factors.

Factors that can impact the time it takes for both extractions and fillings:

  • Tooth location.
  • The number of teeth that must be extracted/filled.
  • The patient’s response to the procedure.

Additional factors that can impact the time needed for fillings:

  • The amount of damage done to the tooth/teeth.
  • The type of filling needed.
  • The dental material being used.

Are fillings stronger than teeth?

Unfortunately, the fillings used in dental procedures are not as strong as the enamel that makes up the rest of the tooth. Because of this, we do not advise you to chew on anything too hard, such as hard candy, nuts, or ice, as this can negatively impact the filling.

Although we have seen a marked improvement in dental fillings over the years, nothing beats the real thing. This is why it’s always best to take care of your natural teeth and prevent these issues from arising wherever possible.

Are there any dangers to getting a filling?

Like all procedures, there is always a level of danger involved. However, when you are dealing with trained professionals, we know what to do and the best way to move forward.

With that being said, there are some risks to be aware of when it comes to getting fillings. The first of these is that allergic reactions can occur with some dental materials. Some people are allergic to particular fillings that are used, which can result in swelling, rashes, or soft tissue burns.

In rare cases, weakening or tooth distortion may occur when some amalgam fillings are used. This can result in some discolouration, but it is not a health concern. Discolouration issues can be avoided by using particular filling materials, so if this is something you are keen to avoid, be sure to mention it.

Popular dental procedures

There are a lot of popular dental procedures that you can get done at clinics around the world. At Eye & Dental Clinic, we offer general dentistry and checkups for your everyday needs, as well as teeth straightening, Invisalign, teeth whitening, and crowns and bridges procedures.

Additional services we offer include:

  • Fillings.
  • X-rays.
  • Dental implants.
  • Repairs.
  • Veneers.
  • Composite bonding.
  • Dentures.

How much do dental procedures cost?

The cost of dental procedures can vary a lot. Some are as little as £10, and others, such as Invisalign, start at £3,745.00.

Because of the training, time, and materials involved, dental procedures are not always as affordable as other forms of healthcare. However, oral health is not something that should be overlooked.

By signing up for dental plans, you can save money and feel better knowing that you can get treatment when you need it. Depending on the plan you choose,

Are cosmetic dental procedures more expensive?

Generally speaking, cosmetic procedures are more expensive than strictly medical ones. However, there will always be variations in prices, so we encourage you to check out the procedures we offer and the associated costs.

When should you see a professional?

Prevention is better than cure, and this definitely applies to oral health. Not only is it easier for you to attend checkups, but it can save you money. Don’t wait until you have a problem before visiting a clinic.

You should have regular checkups to ensure that your oral health and hygiene are good. However, whether you visit the clinic frequently or not, we give you the option to book an emergency treatment appointment to help you through tough times.

Please bear in mind that these appointments should not be booked in place of going to a hospital or calling services if necessary. If you are experiencing swelling or bleeding, or some kind of trauma, you should immediately seek help by calling 111.
